Officially named the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel, the Foursquare Gospel Church has its history traced to Aimee Semple McPherson, a female evangelist who opened the first Foursquare church, Angelus Temple in Long Beach , California. However, the Foursquare Gospel Church in Nigeria started in October 1955 through the endeavours of a missionary couple; Reverend and Mrs. Harold Curtis from USA.
The term “Foursquare Gospel” was given in the inspiration of revival to the denomination’s founder, Aimee Semple McPherson, during an evangelistic campaign in Oakland, California, in 1922. It represents that which is equally balanced on all sides, established and enduring. This is backed by the Scripture in Hebrews 13:8. The name represents the four-fold ministries of Jesus, holding firm to the belief that Jesus Christ is the Saviour of the world, the Healer, the Baptizer with the Holy Spirit and that Jesus Christ is the soon coming King.
Reverend Sam Aboyeji is the current General Overseer of the Foursquare Gospel Church in Nigeria. Reverend Sam was elected into position of General Overseer on the 21st of July 2019, taking over from the former General Overseer, Rev. Felix Meduoye, who served the church for eight years. Sam served as the Midwest Region Overseer of the church until his election.
The Foursquare Gospel Church in Nigeria currently has about 4032 churches spread over 154 districts and 824 zones as at September 2018. The Church in Nigeria has also reached out to neighbouring countries and is established in the Republic of Benin, Ghana, Gambia, Liberia, Cote de voire and Central African Republic. Most of these churches in the west coast have been nationalized. The registered headquarters in Nigeria is at 62/66 Akinwunmi Street Yaba, Lagos State.
The Ministry has different arms catering to teens, youth, children, men and women respectively. The church holds annual conventions, a soul lifting period and a time to meet and fellowship with brethren from different parts of the country. With evangelism as the core of the Foursquare Gospel Church, the ministry has blessed millions of lives across the world starting from the early beginnings of Aimee to the spread of the church in different continents.
