FASHION FRIDAY HOW THE COLOUR OF YOUR CLOTH AFFECTS YOUR BODY TEMPERATURE

  • Picking the right colour for each season

As believers, we should always strive to be knowledgeable about things that affect our BODY knowing that it is the TEMPLE OF THE HOLY GHOST (1 Corinthians 6:19).

A good place to start is to understand how the change in season relates to your body temperature and your choice of clothing. The Bible makes it clear that understanding helps us to gain command of circumstances.

1 Chronicles 12:32 And of the children of Issachar, which were men that had UNDERSTANDING OF THE TIMES, to know what Israel ought to do … and all their brethren were at their commandment.

Body temperature is one of the major factors that determine our productivity in life. It regulates the normal functioning of our bodies and the normal activities of our daily life. The normal body temperature of a person is 98.6 degree Fahrenheit. Due to environmental conditions, our body temperature may vary, and if we take our temperature in Celsius scale then it is recommended to be at 37 degree C under normal conditions.

We need our body temperature to make heat in colder areas and to release heat if we are living in much hotter areas. When we feel too much heat in our body, our blood vessels expand and they take the extra amount of heat to the skin areas. By this process, we start sweating and when the sweat is evaporated, we then begin to feel the coldness. Similarly when we feel too much cold, our blood vessels become thin or narrow, through which there is a reduction of blood flow in the skinny areas. We start to shiver and because of this shivering our muscles shake and they make more heat. One-degree Fahrenheit is equal to 0.6 degree Celsius.

What to wear in clothing is one of the most important questions that arise in the thoughts of so many people. Clothing is a very important aspect for us as humans in order to protect our bodies, to show ourselves as good-looking or for a more personal reason like projecting our social status. Most people wear cloths according to their mood and nature. In clothing, varieties such as jeans, gowns, “buba”, shirt, coat, kammez and many others are often worn in order to comfort ourselves. Then after choosing the type of cloth, another important question is how to choose a suitable colour. Some choose light colours while some choose darker colours.

To keep cool on a sunny day, the colour of your clothes may matter more than the length or material. Have you ever wondered why you feel cooler in a long-sleeved white shirt than you do in a black T-shirt? It all comes down to colour. The colour of an object is determined by the wavelengths of light that object absorbs, and because absorbed light transforms into thermal energy (heat), darker colours attract more heat.

The only colour that does not attract heat is white because white objects reflect all visible wavelengths of light. Black – the colour that absorbs all visible wavelengths of light – attracts the most heat, followed by violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red, in descending order.

To stay cool during the dry season and keep warm during the wet season, keep this rule of thumb in mind. WHITE, RED AND YELLOW are best for the WARM MONTHS when you want to avoid attracting extra heat. In COOL MONTHS, those same colours are best traded for BLUE, VIOLET OR BLACK when you want to trap as much heat as possible.

In all of these, we are admonished to “do all things decently and in order” – 1 Corinthians 14:40 (abridged). Ensure your fashion glorifies God.
