Born in London on 3 July 1967, Helen Yawson lived in Nigeria from age five till she was nineteen before returning to London. After returning to London in 1986, she joined Foursquare Gospel Church on Kingsway London then led by Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo. She responded to the ‘get serious with God’ challenge.

She started singing at an early stage; she was fond of displaying her talent right from her primary school level till she left Nigeria. She joined the Kingsway Foursquare Church Band in 1988 before joining the Church Choir and becoming the Lead Singer in 1989. For the next seven years, her irresistible musical style led to the growth of praises in the Church, giving them the opportunity to perform in various platforms of several countries.

Helen’s contribution to the Kingsway International Christian Centre, (KICC) cannot be ignored, she made a mark in the Choir under Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo the Pastor of the Church. At that time, the Church was becoming the fastest growing church in the UK. She became the coordinator of a group of talented singers at KICC’s North London Satellite Church and was assistant coordinator off the Church’s main Mass Choir.

Her first solo album was released in 1998 followed by another solo album in 2001. Her ‘Anyday’ album was released in 2006, then ‘My God and I’ was released in 2012. ‘Just Hymns’ was released in 2014 and many more. According to her, she plays two roles in the industry, ‘I think I play two roles: worship and inspirational music, but when I write, I go into the role of worshipper. Worship is the context, it is not a style. Worship can be rock and roll; I think it is not confined to a genre. To me, worship is about what you’re saying, it’s not a particular style, it could be Juju or Fuji or Reggae.

She was ordained a Reverend Minister in 2002 on her arrival to Ghana responding to the call of God. she is the director of ‘Voicemania’, a company committed to developing vocal talents through seminars and personal tuition and the Head of the Music and Creative Division, KICC Ghana. Helen Yawson is married to Andrew Yawson and they are blessed with two daughters.

Helen Yawson had her first live concert in Accra, Ghana in 2012 which has now become an annual event. She is an encouragement to many especially those who battle with shyness and self-confidence. She is determined to lead singers to God who deeply desires worship.
