“The internet is literally the playing field like never before, today you can start a business on the internet and no one knows how old we are and what sex we are or where we come from. It doesn’t matter if you are really a college drop out or a single mum, online, what do you do?… Empowering more people to realize their economic potential is not only the good thing to do but the right thing to do. If we are to achieve sustainable growth for the future, we can’t afford to leave anybody out.”
In an era where entrepreneurship is
the new cool and a lot of SMEs are being birth, Cher Wang is a pace setter, role model and god in the business world. She is one of the reasons many people value partnerships. The New Media is gradually taking over and Cher Wang encourages people to be part of it.
Cher Wang, Cofounder and Chairperson of HTC cooperation and integrated chip set maker VIA Technologies is a Taiwanese, born on the 14th of September, 1958. Aged 61. Wang is the daughter of the business mogul, Wang Yung Chin, the founder of Formosa Plastic Group who was once regarded as the second richest man in Taiwan before he passed on. Cher Wang attended the College Preparatory School in Oakland, California and later gained a Masters in Economics from Berkeley. Wang’s early passion and dream was to be a pianist and composer. She is married to Chen Wen Chi.
Wang is a philanthropist, a supporter and encourager. She starts and sees every project to a good finish. Listening to her speak will get you kick started on whatever goal you set. Although Wang was born into a family of business moguls, she decided to start up her own business against the expectation that she would serve strictly at her father’s establishment. According to her, she was driven by passion to create mobile phones rather than be around big computers as she did at her first Job in 1982 at ‘First International Computer’ Co-founded by her sibling, Charlene Wang.
Cher Wang was Director of Sales at First International Computer, during this time, she made a sales of US$700,000 which turned out to be a big loss. Wang traced the guy who defrauded her to Barcelona and stayed there for six months trying to recover her money.
Despite the downtime in her early days in business which would have been enough to deter Wang, she went ahead to establish VIA technologies in 1988 and in 1997 she started High Technology Computers Corporation (HTC) a leading Mobile phone innovator. In 2011, Wang was recognized by Forbes as the richest person in Taiwan and was also rated as the 20th most powerful person in the world.
At the APEC SME Summit, Wang emphasized the need to start small, she made reference to the early days of frontiers like MacDonald’s, Facebook, Google, Sony and VIA technologies and how they started small as a one man or two man initiative till they attained zenith. Wang’s inspiring speech about the baby steps of the major brands we see today stirs the fire for collaboration and creating important and valuable friendship and connections. She encourages people to start, set a vision and go for it. Still on starting small, Wang cites an example of an Icon in her personal faith
“On a personal note, I present the most successful and small business of them all, my faith. Jesus started with a small group of just twelve apostles but by telling the right story and connecting people in a new way, His vision created a movement that has spent centuries and continents and continue to benefit the world by bringing happiness and stability into people’s lives.”
Humility is a key value for Wang as she explains that we need to recognize that we don’t know so much and need to learn from others. As we mount the top in our career, business or any endeavour, it is important to note from the life of Cher Wang the importance of continuous learning
“If I stop learning, I think people will throw me away soon. People can tolerate you for a short period of time but they can’t tolerate you for a longer period. I think it is really important to keep learning.”
Wang’s Christian devotion is undoubted and not hidden as she talks about Christ and her Christian faith on any given platform. During the interview session at the APEC Summit, Wang was quizzed by an audience on her immediate action when faced with setbacks and she replied “I praise the Lord”. She sees every set back as an opportunity to learn something new. In an interview with the New York Times, Wang said that her work ethic is inspired by the Bible. If you don’t catch Cher Wang talking about technology, you’d sure get her talking about her religion.
Wang’s life shows that it is possible for Christians to dominate their industry, be confident about their faith and wealthy without losing touch of the source.
