At an interview on 700 club, Cathy was asked why he doesn’t open his businesses on Sundays while every body does, he said
“Well, we see no conflict between biblical principles and good business practice. The Bible tells us a lot about how to operate our business, if we only read and apply. So closing on Sundays is a decision that I made since 1946”.
Cathy took the decision to promote and allow employees time for worship and family. He also stated that it was in honour to God.
Samuel Truett Cathy, an American businessman, restaurateur and philanthropist born on the 14th of March 1921 was the founder of the popular fast food restaurant chain, Chick Fil- A in Atlanta Georgia. Cathy is distinguished by his Christian principles and kind deeds. He was married to Jeannette McNeil Cathy. Dan, Trudy and Bubba are children to Cathy. He stepped down as CEO of Chick Fil-A and handed over to his son Dan. Before Chick Fil – A, Cathy was running a successful restaurant in Atlanta called ‘The Dwarf Grill’ later called ‘The Dwarf House’.
His transition to establishing the renown Chick Fil- A is a story that points out the lesson of recognizing opportunity and the knowledge to grab and repackage. A company that cooked boneless, skinless chicken for airline meals got rejection from the airlines for chicken pieces that were too big or too small for the airline’s needs. They proposed to sell it to Cathy. Cathy accepted, cooked the chicken in a pressure cooker, put it on a buttered bun, and invented the company’s trademark chicken sandwich. Cathy sold the sandwich at independent restaurants for a few years before opening his first Chick Fil-A restaurant at an Atlanta shopping mall.
Asides his love for serving good meals, Cathy had the love and passion to serve people through his philanthropic projects. In 1982, he founded WinShape, a nonprofit organization and charitable foundation with a goal to strengthen families and bring people closer to God and each other. The foundation which caters to all is committed to equipping Christ centered servant leaders who live life on purpose. An arm of the WinShape foundation operates 13 foster homes and gives good care to foster children. WinShape Homes has provided a safe and secure home to more than 450 children in which they could grow physically, spiritually and emotionally.
Cathy’s faith was and still is the drive behind his success in business, he was a devout Southern Baptist and a long time Sunday school teacher. Cathy was listed on Forbes as the 75th richest person in the U.S. In 2008, Mr. Cathy was presented with the Lifetime President’s Volunteer Service Award at the White House by the then President, George Bush.
With billions of dollars to his name, Cathy sure had enough to teach about business. He authored books titled; It is Easier to Succeed Than to Fail, It is Better to Build Boys Than to Mend Men, Wealth, Is it Worth it?, How Did You Do it, Truett?
Cathy died on the 8th of September 2014, aged 93. His life was that of dedication and service to humanity.
