21st March 2013: Justin Welby is enthroned as Archbishop at Canterbury Cathedral, London, United Kingdom. During his tenure in August 2024, the Church of England’s General Synod narrowly approved prayers for same-sex couples, with votes by Houses: Bishops 22 for, 12 against; Clergy 99 for, 88 against; and Laity 95 for, 91 against. Specifically, the vote approved “Living in Love and Faith,” a liturgy to bless same-sex couples, and authorized clergy to enter into same-sex marriages. This decision was met with both celebration by LGBTQ+ advocates and criticism from conservative Anglicans, with some groups threatening to break away from the Church of England.
The Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) subsequently called the Church of England’s approval of prayers for same-sex couples a fundamental error to Scripture, stating that the decision is a withdrawal from Scriptural teachings that define marriage as solely between a man and a woman. Archbishop Welby resigned from this position in January, 2025 after The Makin Review found he could and should have reported decades-long sexu@l abus€ of men and young boys by his former friend, the Barrister John Smyth QC, who was involved in Christian Ministry for Children.
