It is a great privilege for me to be here tonight. First to be blessed with all that has taken place. I have been thoroughly blessed tonight. For all of the presentations, the ministrations, the creativities and the choir, the testimonies. Church Gist. For all our leaders at various levels who have been responsible for putting this conference together, may the Lord God of Heaven bless and reward you in Jesus name.
Tonight, it is my privilege for the moment that we have, we shall be looking at this subject captioned WAGING WAR AGAINST SPIRITUAL SLUMBER. Church Gist. I want to speak tonight with the passion of a mother and I want to believe God that none of us will return the same way we have come. The labour of all the speakers since this conference over us shall not be in vain.
Romans 11:8. Matthew 13:24-25. It is very important for us to understand as we look at this subject tonight the fact that being a youth can be both exciting and overwhelming. I can tell you this in practical terms because I have been there. It can be very exciting and at the same time very overwhelming. Being a youth is a season of life that is characterized by three things – growth, exploration and learning. Being a youth can be very exciting, very demanding and very challenging. Church Gist. In this season, several youths are confronted with several issues of life. Examples such as peer pressure, academic stress, lack of focus. Thank God we heard about that during the opening charge. You have all these things that can keep distracting people, especially from social media platforms. Church Gist. Relationship matters, you have right now several dating apps. Distraction! Substance abuse. Many get caught up with such issues. Materialism. Wanting to live your tomorrow today. Remember life is in phases and men are in sizes. Cut your coat according to your cloth and then life becomes interesting. Most of these issues end up leading to crisis.
However, your own case shall be different. It is very clear that most crises that youths suffer today can be traceable to spiritual slumber. We just read it in Matthew 13, while men slept the enemy came and sowed tares. Spiritual slumber is a state of spiritual inactiveness. You can be in a spiritual environment and not be active. We are here tonight for instance, wherever you may be connected to this service all over the world. One of the questions you need to ask yourself is how active are you spiritually. Open your bibles, you won’t read. Church Gist. Let’s read that scripture together, you are looking and gazing at the screen saying nothing. Spiritual inactiveness. Some have been sitting here tonight without a Bible in their hands. Check your neighbour does he or she have a notebook that they are writing with. You are great people and you shall be yet greater. Can you imagine someone in this kind of renewal environment and dozing away? Hey!!!! Abomination! How can you be in such a place and your eyes can even blink? Talk less of dose, talk less of sleeping. While men slept. You will not be caught.
Taking spirituality with levity. That is spiritual slumber. In our own days, we didn’t have the opportunities that exist today to listen to the unadulterated Word of God, to have men and women with proofs whose lives we can follow, it wasn’t there. When I was in secondary school, by the way, I went to a boarding school. There was what we call the power of boarding house. These days you can’t even touch a child, they will do all kinds of things. In our own days, your seniors will deal with you, you will smell. Those are some of the things that have helped us. I went to a boarding school and of course in the countryside. Church Gist. Before you go to class in the morning, you have to go to the stream to fetch water with your bucket. You fetch water for the kitchen, you fetch water for your seniors, then if you don’t want to go too many times you quickly take your bath in one corner of the stream and take one bucket home. So the opportunities to develop spiritually, you had to look personally for such opportunities. But here we are today, all over round us opportunities today.
Please hear me very clearly all around the world, the Bible is very clear that to whom much is given much is expected. You will not fail destiny.
When you lack the desire to pray. They say: ‘Let us pray’, you are just murmuring. Study the Word! In less than 5 minutes you are dozing. ‘Let’s go for fellowship’! Except they are running after you and chasing you to be out: ‘Go out!! You are running late’. Church Gist. You are dragging your feet. You are here tonight but are you here because it’s an official responsibility and you have to. Even to tackle the personal issues of your life. Spiritually, when you find yourself dragging, then watch it because spiritual slumber is setting in.
-You shall not be caught.
One of the devil’s Endtime strategies is to keep believers sleeping, to keep them asleep so that they don’t realize their full potential. Church Gist. But I’ve got good news for somebody here, concerning you and I, the devil has already failed. 1 Timothy 4:1-2. What are you saying concerning yourself? ‘That shall not be me’. Say a loud Amen.
A sleeping man is unconscious of his surroundings. In the same vein, when someone is spiritually asleep, he’s unconscious of what’s going on. A spiritual slumber state is a deadly state because in such a state, man is utterly defenseless. And God’s servant, our Father in the Faith, Bishop Oyedepo has told us over and again: ‘If it is well with you spiritually, it will be well with you ‘everywherely’. Church Gist. Amos 6:1. It’s time therefore to awake, spiritual slumber is a risk. Take for instance, no matter how skillful a driver is, when he starts sleeping on the steering you know that danger is close at the door.
-May you never enter a vehicle with a sleeping driver oo.
‘While men slept’! You remember that Scripture? Therefore, it’s time for you and I to be awake, to be awake and fight this fight against spiritual slumber. Church Gist. Ephesians 5:14. Every believer in a state of slumber is undertaking a deadly risk. And we have several examples in the Scriptures. Let’s take a look at some of them briefly. For instance:
Samson.
Say with me: Samson ooo. Say it louder, please. In case your name is Samson, your own will not be like this one in the Bible. Church Gist. Delilah made Samson sleep on his laps and turned that giant into a toy in the hands of his enemy until the day of his death.
-That will not be you.
Judges 16.
-Therefore, right now in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, I curse the ministry of Delilahs in the camp of every youth in this Commission globally. I command their ministry to crumble. Church Gist. Every Delilah that has been sent to bring you down, targeted against your glorious destiny, the pit that they dug for you, they will fall into it.
How about David?
In the Bible, David was spiritually asleep when his eyes caught Bathsheba naked. Mind your eyes oo.
Take one finger and say (Illustrating): My eyes, hear me!
2 Samuel 11:1. The Woman was by herself in her house. But look at David, looking at what he ought not to look at. Church Gist. Some of you when somebody of the opposite sex is passing, your neck is turning 45 degrees, 90 degrees. Not only turning, your mouth is ‘haaaa’ (Illustrating).
Say with me: God forbid oo.
David paid for it dearly. This is written for our example.
-It will not happen to you.
How about Demas?
The Bible tells us about this Man in the Bible, he fell into the trap of the love of this World in his sleepy state. Church Gist. 2 Timothy 4:10. And he lost his place in destiny.
-You will not lose your place.
However in the same vein, we have several examples in Scriptures that are positive.
Father Abraham.
He walked with God and became a spiritual giant. Genesis 24.
-There is another Abraham in the House this evening. You will make it.
How about Job?
Job 1. The Bible tells us that Job eschewed evil and was the greatest man of his time.
-Greatness is coming the way of somebody here. Church Gist. If you’re the one, let your Amen show it.
How about Joseph?
Joseph feared God and he was eventually enthroned.
-You shall be enthroned.
Genesis 41.
And of course, the three Hebrew boys, we are all very familiar with them. What are their names please; one, two, go! (Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego). Yes! They refused to bow, therefore they could not burn.
-Whatever might be burning the Earth in your days; as you remain spiritually awake, (it) shall have no power over you.
Daniel 3. The fire had no power over them. The fire of evil that was consuming others – they refused to bow and therefore they could not burn.
– You will not burn!
– I said you will not burn! Let me hear your loudest Amen!
If you will not burn then you must ensure that you stand out. Make a decision to stand out not to blend in. That others are doing it does not make it right. Your case must be different. You are in school for instance and others are cheating in the examination hall, tell yourself ‘my case is different.’ Church Gist. Others are robbing their parents and stealing from them; tell yourself, ‘my case is different.’ Others are getting involved in all kinds of defilement, immorality, homosexuality, pornography and the list goes on and on, pen robbery – tell yourself, my case is different.
So we have several positive and negative examples in Scriptures but you must make up your mind by the grace of God to wage war against spiritual slumber. And the grace of God is more than available. Church Gist. We’ve heard so much of the Word of God since this Conference began. Let’s begin to put it to work and then you will stand out among your equals making a difference in Jesus name!
The question then is, how do I wage this war against spiritual slumber? You wage this war against spiritual slumber by maintaining spiritual fervency. Church Gist. Everybody say with me, ‘spiritual fervency.’ Be spiritually fervent.
But how can I maintain spiritual fervency? Let me share with you a few tips that will help us at this point in time.
1. Study the Bible as a lifestyle. Jeremiah 15:16, 2 Timothy 2:15. Study! Church Gist. If you don’t want to be caught up in spiritual slumber, do what? Study!
i. Read the Bible.
ii. Meditate on the Word of God.
iii. Research the Word of God.
iv. Memorize Scriptures.
There are many young people today to memorize 5 verses of Scriptures is a challenge without making mistakes. How many of us here can recite one chapter of the Bible (any Book of the Bible – one chapter) without mistake? Church Gist. Can I see your hands up? Wave it! Shout a loud hallelujah! All of you are shouting hallelujah but many hands are not up. (Laughs) Praise the Lord!
What physical food is to our physical body is what the Word of God is to our spirit man. Read it on a daily basis. How often? Daily! Nobody can study the Bible on your behalf. It’s a personal, non transferable responsibility. Church Gist. Study! If you don’t want to be ashamed and be caught up in the well of spiritual slumber, do what? Study! Tell yourself ‘I will study.’ Say it again! This is very important. You have to schedule it.
There are so many things calling for your attention but I can assure you, the more you grow, the more responsibilities you will have. So if now as a youth, you do not have time for the Word of God to read it, to study, to meditate on it, by the time you grow older, things will get worse. Don’t say ‘oh, I am so busy. Oh, I am preparing for examination. Oh, I have programs’ – well-done. Church Gist. By the time you grow older, you will have family, you will have children, you will have to go to work and on and on and on and the responsibilities of life will keep on increasing. So there is no excuse.
– Therefore, any form of slumber when it comes to studying the Word of God in the life of everyone under the sound of my voice right now, I curse it!
You have to have a schedule for Word study and Word meditation. Have a schedule – nobody else can do that for you. Many many years ago, I made a decision and asked God for help, that no physical food will touch my mouth before I eat spiritual food. That has taken many years now and the grace of God has been more than available to make that happen. Schedule it! Church Gist. Don’t say, ‘oh, when I am less busy’ – you will never be less busy. Don’t say, ‘oh, when I have time’ – that time will never come. You are here in the Conference right now, how many of us even today have taken time to study our Bible? Not the message you heard during the Service, you as a person. We have to make it a point of duty to study God’s Word as a lifestyle not when it’s convenient but in season and out of what? Out of season!
Our Father in the Lord, Bishop Oyedepo has said to us over and again, ‘the farther you are from the Word of God, the filthier you become.’ You want to be clean therefore and be awake spiritually, then awake to the study of the Word of God. Ephesians 5:26 tells us: God’s Word can be likened to water. So the more of the Word of God you take, the more you wash yourself clean from every kind of impurity and every kind of smell. Church Gist. You can imagine someone who refused to take his bath the first day, the second day, the third day, what will happen? How many people would like to sit beside such a person? Would you like to sit there? Why? Because some offensive odours will start coming. It’s the same thing with the Word of God.
– Grace therefore from this moment to be more studious and to take the Word of God on a daily basis as our spiritual food, receive it in Jesus name! Can I hear a louder Amen?
2. A fervent prayer and fasting lifestyle. This one, I know that many youths don’t like it. Church Gist. Because as you are chewing groundnut here, then you are chewing gum there and then you are taking sweet over there. That’s not you in Jesus name! Say a believing Amen!
Leviticus 6:13, Matthew 6:6 – it says ‘when ye pray not if you pray but when you pray.’ Schedule it! Matthew 6:16. So prayer and fasting goes together. No one can fast on your behalf. You have to accept that responsibility. Church Gist. Prayer and fasting is every believer’s responsibility for triumphant living. It is our responsibility for triumphant living and we see several men in Scriptures who prayed and fasted and Jesus commands us to do so. We are commanded to pray and to fast. How many of us as youths have ever taken time to schedule fast apart from if it were proclaimed publicly?
It’s very important for us to begin to awaken to our responsibility. I can never forget, when I was in secondary school was the time I began to learn the importance of what study, fasting and prayers and those things are part of the issues that God is using today to help me to where I am right now. Church Gist. From the Secondary School days, I learnt what it meant to fast for 3 days. We were praying concerning issues of our future that we even didn’t know much about. While others went to the dining hall to eat, we took time. We will go into one corner in the bush. We were 5 of us that time that were friends. We would go into the bush towards our hostel, we would be praying, we would be fasting. I thank God today, all of those are helping me a great deal where I am right now. Church Gist. When you take steps in such a direction, you are filling up your cloud and the investment of your youth will wait for you as a harvest tomorrow.
– None of you will get to your future and find nothing.
Paul the Man of God in Scriptures, was a man given to prayer and fasting and he demonstrated power and dominion over circumstances and situations of life including death. Church Gist. 2 Corinthians 6:5. Philippians 1:23. Dominion over death.
– Therefore, the grace of God to be able to stand on the Altar of prayer effectively and fast in an acceptable manner, receive that grace in Jesus name.
For our prayer life to be effective, you must be baptized in the Holy Ghost because He is our Helper. I want to believe that most of us, if not all of us are baptized in the Holy Spirit. If you are not, please, make yourself available to the leaders in your various congregations. I’m sure they will make provision for you to be baptized in the Holy Ghost because the Holy Spirit is our Helper on the Altar of prayer. There is no way you can be effective in your prayer life without being baptized in the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in tongues.
How many of us are baptized in the Holy Spirit? Wave your hand, let me hear you shout a loud Hallelujah.
He is our Helper. He helps our infirmities and you don’t have to pay for it. All you need to do is be born again. Everyone that is born again has access. All you need to do is to ask.
I can never forget in that little primary school, it was 1976. I’ve heard the teachings concerning the baptism in the Holy Spirit and I knelt down alone by myself in that little classroom and I prayed to God asking Him for the baptism in the Holy Ghost and He did. Church Gist. The Baptizer came and up till today it has been a great adventure. He can do the same thing in your life. You can even get back to your hostels or your house or wherever you came out from tonight, kneel down in one corner if you’re not baptized yet, pray to God. “Lord, baptize me with the Holy Ghost” and it will begin to flow from your belly. Begin to give Him thanks and as you do so, you shall be baptized and newness of life becomes your portion.
– We shall all make it in Jesus name.
So, prayer and fasting as a way of life.
God’s Servant has shared with us severally how that in the year 1985 or 86, he literally fasted throughout the year. Church Gist. So, if you attend a fellowship or service, or Church where there is no specific day for fasting, proclaim one for yourself. You will discover that life will open up to you in a new dimension.
– Can I hear a loud Amen?
3: Give yourself wholly to your findings in the Word of God. That is, diligently obey every dictate of the Scriptures. This is very, very important. Jeremiah 23:29. Jeremiah 20:9. Church Gist. Revelation without application will lead to frustration. We are here upon this Mountain, it’s been line upon line, precept upon precept, writing notes, but after that, what next are you going to do?
One of the testifiers here tonight said he got back and then began to go through his notes yesterday. That’s what it should be. Church Gist. ‘What are we going to do?’ You must have your takeaway from this Conference, the steps you begin to take, the things you begin to do so that you’ll not be only a hearer of the Word but a hearer and a doer of the Word.
– The grace, therefore, to put your findings to work, receive it in Jesus name.
Remember, it’s the Word of God that you engage in that will enhance your destiny. Obey the Word, apply the Word, put the Word of God to work and then, divine intervention will become your portion.
– Can I have a loud Amen?
4: Maintain company with spiritually fervent people. Of course, it’s a known fact, the company you keep either makes you or mars you. This is very critical. Proverbs 27:17. Church Gist. It is often said and this is very true, show me your friend and I will tell you who you are. The company you keep will always rub off on you either for good or for bad. Proverbs 13:20…and of course, birds of a feather flock together.
I want you to ask yourself today, “Who are my friends?” Are they helping your destiny or dragging it down? Who are your friends? Remember, it’s easier to pull people down than to take them up. Church Gist. If you climb a stage and someone is down, it’s easier for that person that is down to just pull you down.
– You will not go down!
Some of you hearing me today, you need to change your friends. Those friends that when you talk and you leave that place, your spirit man is down, change your friends. If you don’t change them, they will chain you. Church Gist. Change those friends so your destiny can open up. Keep company with Christians who seek spiritual growth that you are seeking and that’s the only way to keep going up.
– From today, your destiny shall not go down.
We have several examples in Scriptures. We mentioned a while ago, Samson. He companied with Delilah, his great destiny was destroyed. How about Amnon in the Bible? Amnon, we were told, had a friend, 2 Samuel 13, Jonadab and that friend destroyed his destiny. Church Gist. How about Dinah in Scriptures? Genesis 34. She kept company with the daughters of the land that God had forbidden them to and she ended how she ended.
Who are your friends? Evil company corrupts good manner. 1 Corinthians 15:33. Today, if you need to make a change, don’t wait till tomorrow. The people that you company with determine what accompanies you. It’s a known fact that your association will greatly affect your destination. Church Gist. Anyone you are close to that is not going the same direction with you, that is dragging you to filthiness, to spiritual slumber, it’s high time you took a stand and said no more, no more and no more.
– The strength to be able to take that decision, receive it in Jesus name.
All my life, I’ve never had an unbeliever as a friend – never for once! All of my life time, never for once! Church Gist. There is nothing to envy in an unbeliever because your destiny is so precious, don’t cast it before the swine.
– You will make it in Jesus’ name!
5. Fellowship and Kingdom Service is critical: Hebrews 10:25. Fellowship is our spiritual service station. Just like every car requires regular servicing and your battery also needs constant charging, the same way your spiritual engine and battery require constant servicing in Church and the God ordained service station is the Church. You don’t just get fed in Church, you’re also renewed just like you’re being renewed right now.
We’ve been told over and again, spiritual vacation is a risk. God’s servant has told us about one brother called Brother Emmanuel that was away from fellowship only for 3 weeks and by the time he returned, he had gone back, backslidden, he had started drinking. Church Gist. Thank God for restoration. You’re here tonight, you require restoration, God is here for you but don’t go back to your vomit.
Attend Church services regularly as a delight not as a compulsion whether you’re at home, vacation or wherever you may be. Don’t settle down only with online services. Our Resident Pastor here, Pastor David has told us that, “attending online services cannot be a substitute.” You can take that of course like an appetizer in your food getting ready but that cannot replace the actual menu. Church Gist. In these days of all kinds of technology, don’t say, “oh, I’ll just sit down and be watching online services at home” – no! That cannot be a substitute; refuse to be robbed. There is power in fellowship and God has commanded us so. Therefore, grace to continue to attend fellowship as a delight, receive it in Jesus name!
Of course when you go to God’s house, to Church, don’t just be a bench warmer. Find a place for service, be involved, make your own contribution to kingdom advancement. This is one of the ways that keeps you in check and as you serve God, your spiritual strength shall be renewed. Not only that, in the place of service, you find your blessings and your rewards and God’s rewards meets us in various forms, shapes and colour. Church Gist. Not only monetary matters, favour is one of it. Joy, peace, great relationships, are all of it. You can easily find a God ordained spouse for yourself in the place of service rather than couching yourself and hiding in one corner. Many of you are believing God for your God ordained spouse. I rejoice with you because as you make yourself available and you become alert, awake spiritually, your God ordained spouse will locate you and your great marital destiny shall be realized. You will not make a wrong choice o!
You find a young man or woman that you have to propel, push, encourage, before he will go to Church, pray and serve God in any way, don’t look at such a person twice. Turn your back, fire on the mountain… (Run run run).
Therefore as you serve God, the blessings of God bellows on you.
In closing, it’s very important for us to remind ourselves to win the war against spiritual slumber. You have a part to play and no one can play your part for you. You have to prioritise your spiritual life because your spiritual state is what defines your overall state in life.
– I pray for each one of us, for grace to remain spiritually awake!
– All the days of our lives that it become our portion in Jesus’ name.
– As you remain committed to being spiritually awake, I see you fulfilling your great destiny!
What more? One of the greatest benefits of spiritually being awake is eternity. You will make it there! We all shall make it there. Matthew 16:26. The question to you and I therefore tonight as we close is: where will you spend eternity? Church Gist. You will make it to the end in Jesus’ name!
