Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.Daniel 1:12
Daniel opted for water and vegetables instead of the King’s meat and drink and appeared better than the others who were to be trained. Daniel must have understood how healthy water is. He knew the importance of taking care of his body so much that he refused to take in what would further do him no good. Non-carbonated water still remains the best option for healthy living. It has no side effects, less calories and provides several benefits to the body. God instructs us to take care of our bodies, because it is His temple. 1 Corinthians 6:19. Taking care of our body involves not stuffing it with drinks or meals with less nutritional value.

Carbonated drinks otherwise known as soft drinks or fizzy drinks are drinks that contain dissolved carbondioxide, hence the name “carbonated”. The carbon dioxide in a carbonated beverage also causes people to burp after they drink it, because the gas is released after being ingested into the body.
Although the ingredients in carbonated drinks are deemed safe by standard health organizations, these beverages may cause side effects, especially if you consume them on a regular basis. Familiarizing yourself with the possible side effect of carbonated drinks can help you make informed nutrition choices. Examples of carbonated beverages include spring water, some wine, juice, beer, energy drinks and soft drinks. The dangers of consuming carbonated drinks must be discussed so that people can make their choices based on continuous consumption or not.

As much as carbonated drinks give that satisfaction while you are caught in traffic and need something chilled to cool your head because the weather is hot, it causes some side effects that might put you in trouble later.

TOOTH DECAY
Regular consumption of sodas can harm the teeth. This is because of the sugar in the drinks which interacts with the bacteria in the mouth to form acid. The mouth contains bacteria that feeds on sugar, producing chemicals that can break down the hard enamel of the teeth. This forms a cavity when the soft inner core of the tooth is exposed after erosion. The sugar remaining in the mouth after drinking sweetened carbonated drinks lead to the processes that promote tooth decay.

CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES
Drinking carbonated drinks regularly leads to weight gain because of its calories, which in turn causes cardiovascular diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, stroke and so on.

HEARTBURN
Carbonated drinks as said earlier, contains dissolved carbondioxide. This becomes gas when it is warmed up in the stomach. Consuming carbonated soft drinks may cause repeated belching as your stomach stretches from the accumulation of carbon dioxide gas.
Food and stomach acid may come up your food pipe as you belch, causing heartburn and a sour taste in your mouth.

POOR NUTRITION
Consuming more of carbonated drinks reduces your consumption of protein, vitamins, minerals, starch and so on. This affects your overall nutrition intake.

REDUCED BONE STRENGTH
Consumption of carbonated drinks reduces bone strength. This is because of the presence of phosphorus which causes loss of calcium from the body through the kidneys. According to research, women who consume regular and diet cola tend to have weaker hipbones compared to those who do not drink these beverages.

Despite the side effects, the market for these products is still continuing to show outstanding growing potential. If you want to take care of your body, lose weight, avoid chronic disease, and live longer, consider limiting your intake of sugary drinks. Opt for water instead. It is a better option.
