Today, when people introduce themselves as influencers, our minds quickly imagine social media, massive followers and popularity. In the real sense, influencers have a higher impact on their followers and because they are seen as ‘gods’ in whatever field they influence, people tend to listen to them, replicate what they are doing, share their ideologies, sound or talk like them believing that whatever they say or suggest would be right. Sometimes, they are not right, they have only amassed loyal followers.
In same manner, we have what is tagged ‘Fashion Influencers’. These are people who have a great impact on the way fashion is perceived. To an extent, they determine what should be right or wrong, their wardrobe set standards people are itching to follow.
Sadly, the fashion trend in the world is slowly creeping into churches. Believers want to emulate styles by celebrities because they deem it right. However, our bible says
“There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death”. Proverbs 14:12.
What we feel is ‘okay’ by worldly standards may not sit well with our representation of the Kingdom of God. Excuses have been made to accommodate some trends ‘it is not too revealing, it is not too short’ when it shouldn’t be revealing at all.
Modesty should be maintained at all times. You can be fashionable and Godly.
The first time I saw Pastor Mrs Ukamaka Laurie Ntia, wife to the Lead Pastor of Full Life Christian Centre, Reverend Ntia I. Ntia, at close range, I was stunned by her smile, radiance, the grace that accompanied her and the fact that she was well covered yet beautiful, fashionable and classy. I began looking out and noticed same with other pastor’s wife; Pastor Dara Ezekiel Atang, Pastor Dorathy Alika, Pastor Becky Enenche and for the younger generation, Serah Jakes. They are all examples of Godly fashion, I then concluded that it is possible to be well dressed and exude elegance.
Know that you are an influencer. This means that someone is watching, someone is emulating you with or without your knowledge. There is someone who appreciates your style, right or wrong and would want to act, behave or dress like you.
At all times, the question on our minds should be ‘What are my influencing?’ What kind of conversations do you influence, what kind of people do you attract/influence, what kind of fashion style do you influence?
We are yielded to the Holy Spirit when He can question our influence when it concerns Godly fashion.
