‘My father strongly opposed that idea. In fact, he once told me that I would die in church because of my love for music. He did not just understand why music should be a career choice for me. He preferred me to do a regular work and earn money rather than to insist on doing music, which he felt was a waste of time’.
Bukola Bekes is a worshipper who has grown to become a force in RCCG Choir, she doesn’t only lead praise and worship sessions, but also composes theme songs for RCCG’s Conventions and Congresses. Born on 10th September, 1980, she was raised in Idi-Oro, Mushin, Lagos State as the fourth child in a family of six. She loved to sing from her childhood and was advised to join the Adult Choir as a child because she sang too well to be a child. ‘I remember that the leadership of the Church we attended back then asked at a point that I join the Adult Choir because I wasn’t singing like a child, I was singing like a grown woman’ she said.
Together with her band ‘Olubukunola Bekes and The Paradise Minstrel’, Bukola has gone far and wide across nations to minister in songs both in English language and in her local dialect. She has graced the stage with several gospel artistes like Brian Cage, Pastor Kunle Ajayi, Kirk Franklin, Ron Kennoly, Sammie Okposo, Mike Aremu and many more and has performed at the Festival of Life, which is one of the biggest programs held in London’s Excel Centre.
She is happily married to Damilola Bekes, a musician like her who plays musical instruments like saxophone and piano. The union is blessed with beautiful children. Her unique voice which has stood out to bless people and offered worship to God is still been heard as her light continues to shine brighter as she blesses us with her music. She is one of the Praise and Worship Leaders of the RCCG City of David Parish, Lagos Province 4, (Apapa family Headquarter.).
