Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 as we want to discuss briefly on the SEASONS OF WONDERS. To everything there is a season.
- My prayer is that your season of joy will begin today.
What do we mean by wonders? Someone had defined a wonder as that which causes you to wonder. Church Gist. In other words, a miracle so great that it is almost unbelievable. A miracle that causes you to open your mouth involuntarily.
- May you experience that today!
For example in Acts 3:1-11. What is a season? It is simply a time when certain things normally happens. For example when we talk of rainy season in this part of the world. We are talking about a time when rain normally falls. If somebody gets up and says he is a prophet, in June, and he says, “Thus says the Lord, it shall rain tomorrow.” You will just laugh at him; June is the rainy season; you don’t need to prophesy to us. Like in Deuteronomy 28:12. So when we talk of season of wonders we are talking of a period of time when wonders happen; when what we should expect will be wonders. Church Gist. For example in Acts 2:1-12. The apostles spoke in strange tongues and yet everybody understood them. That was a wonder. Almost immediately it was followed by Acts 3:1-11 when all of a sudden they saw a man who was born lame walking, leaping, praising God. Almost immediately it was followed by Acts 5:1-16. It was followed almost immediately by Acts 8:5-8. It was followed by several cases when disciples were put in prison and overnight the prison doors will open on its own like in Acts 12:5-11; Acts 16:25-end. Church Gist. You couldn’t put these people in prison. You put them on prison, before you go there the following morning they’re gone. Wonders after wonders. It was a season of wonders.
- I am believing God at least for the Redeemed Christian Church of God to start with, this will be our season of wonders!
The big question is actually: How long does a season last? I know a country not too far away from Africa when they told me that if it rains once a year and the rain lasts up to 15 minutes, they rejoice. Once a year; 15 minutes rain – and they will say God has been good to us this year. That means their own rainy season lasts 15 minutes. That day I said, “Thank God I am in Nigeria.” Our rainy season can last for months. Church Gist. How long does a season last? It depends entirely on God because according to Daniel 2:20-21, he is the controller of times and seasons. Exodus 15:11. He is the one who does wonders and he can decide how long a particular season is going to last. 2 Peter 3:8. He can allow wonders to last for a thousand years and regard it as one day.
- I am praying for you that your wonders will last forever
For example: as young as I am, I have seen revivals. Mighty revivals, breaking all over the world. I remember a time when at a particular time of the year, all of us who are pastors will be rushing to a particular country in the world because a man is going to be having a convention that will last for one week. We will come from all over the world. The first time I attended, about 17,000 people present. To me whose congregation then was less than 1,000, I’ve never seen such a crowd. But it lasted for a season. Church Gist. Now if they hold that same meeting, it will be a miracle if they get 3,000 people. The season has passed. But then by the special grace of God (because God has a very special love for us) we started the Holy Ghost Service in 1986 and up till now, miracles are still happening. The season is still continuing.
- I pray for someone here today, your season of wonders will last forever.
There is something better than the season of wonders and that is the God of wonders himself. You know he doesn’t grow old. As far as he is concerned, when you are shouting, Happy New Year, he will just be smiling in Heaven because you’re the one saying one year is ending, another year is beginning. Church Gist. As far as he is concerned, from everlasting to everlasting, he is God. As far as he is concerned, there is no difference between January 1 and February 5. He is God all the time. If you have the God of wonders, if he is your friend, Thank God he is my friend, you can have wonders anywhere, anytime. Whenever you need a wonder, he performs one for you. It doesn’t matter where you are.
For example: some 40 something years ago, I was in Britain. I went to write our Sunday school pamphlet. I have finished and I still had some 3 days to return because in those days we were so rich that we had to buy special tickets. The tickets will be discounted but we spend at least 2 weeks where you are going. Church Gist. That is the condition for discounting the ticket. It is the cheapest one. So I have finished what I went to do, but the time for me to return is not yet. I ran out of money. So I said to God, “Daddy, I still have 3 days to go. You know I don’t mind fasting. But there are some things I would have loved to take back to Nigeria – books, tapes. It will be good if I can have 50 pounds.” I just prayed it as a casual prayer; I wasn’t expecting an answer but God is going to surprise somebody here today. Church Gist. Within minutes, my phone rang – it was landline then. I picked the land line; the caller wanted to speak to someone and I replied, “there is nobody like that here.” He said, “Sorry” I said, that’s okay, God bless you. He said, “ah, God bless me?” I said yes. I said, do you know God? He said, yes I know him. He said, how do you know him? I said, he is my saviour. He said, who am I talking to? I said my name is Adeboye. He said, which Adeboye? I said, of Redeemed Christian Church of God. He began to scream and call his brother to come. Church Gist. Apparently the 2 of them had been talking and discussing me, wishing that one day they will meet me and now I am on the phone.
To cut the long story short, they took my address and the 2 of them came, we talked and when they were going, they gave me 50 pounds. 50 pounds through wrong phone call. That’s a wonder. I blessed them, they left. Church Gist. As I was climbing upstairs to the room where I was staying, I was saying to God, “Daddy, if I had known that’s how quickly you will answer, I would have asked for a 100 pounds.”
I got upstairs, knelt down to pray because I wanted to sleep, and the door bell rang. I got up wondering who is coming to visit me this night. The phone rang and I said, I am coming. Church Gist. Before I got there, the fellow had gone but he had passed through an envelope through the opening of the door. I picked up the envelope, I looked at the writing, it is a writing I recognize of a friend of mine – very rich man but the number one miser of the world. He can’t play with you with one Naira. I picked the envelope and I saw a note at the back of the envelope. He said, I just realized that all these years I have never given you anything. So I just want to give you this. I opened the envelope, 50 pounds. I took the envelope and was going up, you know I was a little child just some 40 something years ago. You know how young I must be. “Daddy, if I had known that another 50 will come, I will have asked for 150. Church Gist. To cut a long story short, very soon another 50 pounds came. Then I became afraid. “Almighty God I was joking o. All I wanted was 50 pounds.”
- In a way you cannot imagine, God will perform a wonder for you!
That is just a few to let you know the God I am serving. To let you know why somebody like me was so passionate about serving him.
Several years ago, I was going to one of these meetings that I was talking about in America and the plane had to take me through Dallas. Changed plane in Dallas and one of my children who was living in Dallas then, came to meet me at the Airport. Church Gist. I spent a night with him and the following day he was taking me to the Airport so I can continue my journey. As we were going God spoke to me. At that time we did not have Redeemed Christian Church of God in America at all. As were driving to the Airport God spoke to me and said, do you know the headquarters of the Redeemed Christian Church of God in America is going to be in this town? Well, he is the one who spoke. Church Gist. So I shared it with my son in the car and we all said, Amen.
Couple of years later, something happened. There was a man living in Dallas. God has spoken to him years before to go and buy a piece of land. He told God, what do I need a farmland for? Church Gist. I’m not a farmer and I’m not interested in farming. God said, I am not asking you to buy it for yourself. Buy the land. The fellow said, Yes Lord and he bought the land.
Years after my son and I had that little discussion on the way to the Airport, he went to a restaurant to eat. The man who bought that land was in the restaurant eating. He saw my son coming in and God spoke to him and said, that’s the owner of that land. Church Gist. So the man came to my son where he sat down to eat and said, Are you a missionary from Africa? He said yes. He said, ‘well, years ago God asked me to buy a piece of land. I bought it. Now that God has told me that the land belongs to you. Finish your food so that we can go and see. My son said, food? Let’s forget food. Come and show me the land. A 114 acres of land. That’s how we got to Redemption Camp in Dallas. God of wonders!
The day they took me to the land and I saw the land, very near by there is a very huge house of another farmer who owns a lot of land. When my children took me there, they showed me the land, when they wanted to go back to town, I said, “go; I want to spend the night here. Church Gist. I want to pray and thank God who can do this kind of wonders.” So they left me alone in a vehicle. So I kept on praying. I went out prayer and prayed at night but it was cold. After some time, I went back into the car but my heart was still racing. I still wanted to praise him more. So after I got warm again, I came out and all of a sudden, he spoke.
- Our God will speak to somebody today!
He said, “Son, that house is yours.” He said, “Son, walk up and down this place. As far as your eyes can see, I’ve given it unto you.” Today we have more than 800 acres of land there. When I told my children that God said, “this house is mine,” they said, “don’t say it loud.” Because the place God has given us is the headquarters of an organisation called KKK. Church Gist. They are the people who used to roast black people for fun. So if you let this man hear what you have said, he will just shoot you. I said I will keep quiet. 2 years later, he put up a notice, “for sale.” When they went to him and told him that this is what God said 2 years ago he said, ‘why didn’t you tell me? I have been having headache. Should I sell or should I not sell? For 2 years I have been feeling restless here.’
- Everybody occupying your blessing, the God of wonders will speak to them now!
I can go on and on and on talking about the God of wonders.
You know, when I became General Overseer, things were hard. I mean, the entire income of the Church was less than my monthly salary as a senior lecturer in the University. We had some 39 people to pay every month. Church Gist. By the time we have paid everybody, there is nothing left for the General Overseer. Then I collected my gratuity and I said, ‘this is big money. At least I can manage this one till the Church grows.’ All of a sudden I realized I am now under a new management. I am not employed by the government; I am employed by God.
So let me talk to my new manager, ‘How do you want me to handle this money?’ I was thinking I will save some, after paying my tithe. I just asked him, “Lord, what do you want me to do with the money?” He said, divide it into 3. Church Gist. Give one-third to this ministry, one-third to that ministry and the remaining one-third to this other ministry. That was tough. I said yes Lord to the first one. The second one, my Yes Lord was very low. When he said I should give the remaining one-third, it was tough.
But then he said something, “Son, I will be your source.” So if you see the glory of today, there is a story behind it. Church Gist. Not only has he been providing mysteriously, you want the secret, go to the God of wonders.
Something happened (it might be little to you, it wasn’t little to me) I was in America. Those of you who know me, when I travel, I am booked back to back. When I am about to leave one town, the people in the next town, they have been gathering for one previous hour. Church Gist. So I was about to go, I was already sitting down in the jet that they had graciously provided and we were about to move. They wanted to close the door of the plane when all of a sudden as they were closing the door, they noticed a smoke. When your plane gives you a little problem on the ground, you better thank God because in the air, there is no parking space. So we came out and if the plane is giving a problem, there is no road side mechanic. You can’t call anybody to come and repair. Church Gist. You have to tell the manufacturer then they will tell you where their nearest representative is who will come to look at the plane.
What am I going to do? I’m supposed to be where I am going by 10am; now it is 9. So we tried to get commercial plane. The one who is going to travel to where we are going is going at 5pm. So I said, ‘Father what am I going to do? Your children are already waiting. All of a sudden, some people saw my son; ‘Ah! Leke how are you? Where is Daddy?’ ‘Oh! Daddy is over there.’ ‘We want to see Daddy.’ They asked where I was going and I told them. Church Gist. They said we are pilots, our boss will soon arrive. The boss came, I’ve never met the boss before. They said, ‘Daddy G. O is here, his plane is having a little problem and he is wondering if we could take you to where you’re going, drop you there and come and pick him to where he is going.’ That man said, ‘Daddy G. O.? Ask him if he will kindly allow you to take me to where I am going first before going to where he is going.” I arrived on time for my program and God spoke to me and said, “Son, I told you I will be your source.”
- Anywhere you need help, help will be there waiting! Anywhere you need help, wonder will be waiting for you!
If you don’t have the God of wonders, your season of wonder will be short. If you have the God of wonders, your season of wonders will be forever. Church Gist. But not only that, you can ask me a simple question: “How can I enjoy wonders every day?” It is up to you. 1 Kings 17:8-16.
That’s telling those of us who are Christians to put God first and provoke a daily blessing, daily wonders. Church Gist. As for those of you who haven’t already surrendered your life to Jesus Christ, what are you waiting for? Don’t wait for a season. Establish a relationship with the God of wonders.
