Matthew 5:14-16. The Lord bless His Word in the name of Jesus Christ.
In this morning of breaking limits, which would be the focus of our prayers at the end, we are speaking on “Shining as Light at the Top”. Church Gist. The objective of our breaking limit is to shine as light at the top. Our objective this morning is to understand why we should shine as light at the top and understanding what to do to get there.
By way of introduction, there are three things the Scripture makes clear:
1. We are the light of the world.
2. We are a city set on a hill.
3. We must not be hid.
– somebody say after me, “I am designed to be the light of the world, to be a city set on a hill and never to be hid”.
– I announce to someone here today, as God has designed and destined you to be, so shall you be, in your family, community and your generation!
Meaning is; we are expected to shine as light for God at the topmost places of life. Matthew 5:14. Church Gist. The question is, for what purpose? Why should we shine as light at the topmost places of life?
1. To represent God well to our generation. Once we don’t shine, once we live as mediocres in the things we do and we don’t deliver it excellently, we misrepresent God to our generation.
2. To bring maximum honour and glory to God with our results. Matthew 5:16.
3. To bring souls into the Kingdom with our testimony of excellence.
Somebody said that unbelievers don’t have Bibles and even if they have Bibles, they don’t read the Bibles. The Christian is the Bible that the unbeliever reads. Church Gist. No wonder you do some things sometimes and they say, “you claim to be a Christian”. As Christians, we are to bring souls to God with our testimony of excellence.
4. To bring Godly influence to bear on institutions, nations and organizations under our jurisdiction. Church Gist. That is, God wants us to shine as light at the top places of the earth so that wherever you’re found, every organization, institution and nation under you can have the influence of the Kingdom on them, because systems are influenced from the top down not from the down up.
– there are people here today I believe that God is about to assist you to be positioned where you need to be positioned so that the influence of the Kingdom can be felt within your jurisdiction.
– look at your neighbour, say, “your generation is waiting for you. Your nation is waiting for your influence. Your institution is waiting for your influence. Your organization is waiting for your influence”.
5. To function as a voice for the Kingdom where necessary. God positions his people, He positioned Daniel, Joseph, Esther and Joseph of Arimathea, in their days so that they can serve as voices for the Kingdom. Church Gist. When it is time to speak concerning Godly values in the National Assembly or whatever it is, you’re able to do so as a voice of the Kingdom so that it is not only the voice of the world, the secular system, the antichrist or the anti-God that is speaking where there’s a need to speak.
– there are people here, I announce today, God will give you a voice and that voice shall be used for the Kingdom!
What does it mean to shine? When we are talking of shining, we are talking of shining on the behalf of God and the Kingdom. Church Gist. What does it mean to shine?
1. To standout or be outstanding for God in what you do and in life.
2. To release the very best in life. You’re not holding back to release the very best. Church Gist. Be an A-grade personality in the things you do as a child of God.
3. To release your full potentials. When the light is dim, its potential is not out but when it is brightly shining, its full potential is out. To release your full potentials in whatever you do as a child of God.
4. To produce exceptional and excellent results in life. Church Gist. Let your world know you as a child of God as a person of excellence and as a person who is exceptional.
5. To live commendably and honourably. Your life and results are commendable and honourable. They bring commendation to you and honour to your God. Church Gist. Don’t be a child of God in the workplace that is bringing dishonour to the Kingdom by the way you carry out your assignment. Don’t be a child of God in your family that brings disgrace to God by the way you carry out your lifestyle. Shine; live commendably and honourably.
– In the season we are in, I believe there’s someone here hearing the sound of my voice whose life is about to bring maximum honour to God, if you’re that one, say a loud Amen!
What are the keys to shining at the top in life?
1. The heart for God. Matthew 6:33. Psalm 63:8. In this Kingdom, if you want to be a Daniel, a Joseph, a Queen Esther for your generation, you need the heart for God. Your heart for God determines your height in life. Church Gist. Your heart for God determines your path with God. Dedication to God remains a secret of distinction in life. Solomon had that heart and God made him the most important king that ever existed in his time. 1 Kings 3:3. King Uzziah loved the Lord. 2 Chronicles 26:5.
2. Kingdom vision/mindset. What is the meaning of that? Having the mind or the vision to accomplish big things for the sake of the Kingdom. Matthew 5:14-16. John 15:16. Church Gist. That was what the mother of Samuel did when she was looking for a child. “Lord, I am not looking for a child for myself, I know you have a need for a Priest in your house. Give me a child and I will give you a Priest”. 1 Samuel 1:11. That’s called Kingdom mindset and vision. That is, the things you’re about to achieve are not for your sake but for the sake of the Kingdom. That was the story of David. 1 Samuel 17:26. Church Gist. He was not trying to kill Goliath to prove a point or to make a name, He was very angry on behalf of God. “Why should God be mocked like this? I want to rise and contend with this man”. Is there anybody here with that kind of jealousy on behalf of God to say that, “why should the children of the enemy be more popular than the Children of God? Church Gist. Why should the antichrist people be more influential than the children of the Kingdom? Why is it that when it’s time to speak and say something, it is people of the other side that are talking and not the people of the Kingdom? Church Gist. Lord, here am I, make me an instrument in your hands, make me a voice in my generation and I am going to speak on your behalf”. If there’s anybody like that, say a loud Amen!
– say after me, “Father, I am available, achieve your greatness through my life”.
3. Upright living. Hear this, when you decide to be upright, you’re destined to end right up. Church Gist. Somebody said, “atimes when you’re upright, they push you down”. No. They may try initially like they tried in the case of Joseph. How many of you remember the vision of Joseph in Genesis 37:7. Church Gist. That vision did not only reveal the future of Joseph, it revealed the character of Joseph and that character is upright. The meaning is, if you decide to be upright, you have become designed to be right up. At the end of the day, Joseph was on top all of them. Genesis 37:2. Job 1:1. Church Gist. Hear me brothers and sisters, if you want to fulfill your destiny, be upright.
Three days ago, I called our account officer because, you know, people give you gift as their Prophet, they say, “the Lord led me to give you this”. Church Gist. Now, one of those envelopes I saw, it was written, “Heavenly Father, I am giving you this seed so that you can change my story and I look up to you for answers”, it was given to me and the money inside it was in 6 zeros. When I read the caption at the back, I am not Heavenly Father and it’s impossible for me to pretend that I didn’t read what was on the envelope. So, I called the account officer and said, “this one is for Heavenly Father, put it where it belongs for Heavenly Father”. Church Gist. The man said to me that he didn’t know that after someone handed over something to me and said, ‘this is for you’, you still had the time to still read the envelope. Well, I have to read it to be double sure that the person did not make a mistake.
Somebody was in my office yesterday and he said, “this is the first business he did and he wants to give first fruit”. I said, “for what purpose is it?” He said, “he has brought it so that I can assist him give it”. Church Gist. So, I said, “you know what? My secretary is right there, go to him and tell him what it is and he will assist you pass it”. Oh yes, I had to ask because Adam ate one apple and lost a garden. There are people who close their future because of taking what is not theirs.
– look at your neighbour, say, “if you want to be right up, start by being upright”.
You don’t cut corners, you’re not crooked, you’re straight. Church Gist. Integrity will undergird authority and sustain Kingdom responsibility.
– I believe that somebody today, whatever was your testimony in the time past that was not correct, from today, God will give you a correct testimony!
4. Heart for people. A heart for people is key to height of influence. A heart for people will naturally provoke the followership of people. Church Gist. It is said in leadership that people don’t care what you know until they know that you care. What was it that made Joseph? A heart for people. Genesis 40:5-7. A heart for people placed him as leader in Egypt. Abraham, Genesis 14:14, he had children that were born in his house, that he trained. He trained other people’s children, 318 out of them that he formed into a private army when he had no child of his yet. David. 1 Samuel 17:26. 1 Samuel 22:1-2. And of course Nehemiah. Nehemiah 1:3. Church Gist. When he heard that his people were in captivity and that the wall of Jerusalem was broken, they didn’t even have where to stay, he began to cry and God used that to take him up and position him as the governor of Judah.
What is your heart for people? There are many people who want to influence people without having a heart for people. But my brothers and my sisters, if you want God to facilitate your influence at the top and to make you an influencer among men, you need a heart for people.
5. The release of excellence. Proverbs 22:29. What are we talking about? Everywhere you find yourself, give life all that you have got. Church Gist. It is the full release of your potentials and your best. Acts 20:20. If you want to get to the top, you don’t walk on the ladder of mediocrity, you walk on the ladder of excellence. Ecclesiastes 9:10.
I told you this story before, when I was a medical student, I normally went to the back of the physiology laboratory to pray during break time. Church Gist. One of those days, I met a young man, he was praying there too and I just shared a Scripture with him and it set him on fire. I was in 200 level, and he was in 300 level. The next day, he came, he kept coming and then he said, “you know what? I am the president of the Medical Students’ fellowship, what you’re sharing with only me, can you come and help me share it with the whole fellowship?” So, I went and shared it and the whole place was ablaze, the power of God was everywhere, people were dropping under power while we were standing on the altar preaching, no hand laid. 200 level. Church Gist. Overflow started, formerly Becky Ibu was in that service wearing very thick glasses that was like coca-cola bottle. She asked somebody, “where did that guest minister come from? Which ministry did they invite him from?” The whole place was ablaze, so much was released, I didn’t hold anything back at all. I preached like a man from another world. Church Gist. When it was time to appoint another president after that man, they said I was the one, unanimously. Then, I was president of my school fellowship and we went for a national conference to University of Lagos, everybody was there. The president of each school was to take a segment of the service and they asked me to take 5 minutes of prayer. I prayed for that 5 minutes as if I prayed for 5 hours. By that 5 minutes, everything happened, everything dropped. They normally did election for who would be president, when they said, “who would be the president?” All of them pointed in one direction, “him, is our national president now”. Church Gist. We didn’t come where we are by crookedness. Give life all, give every opportunity, do it like it is your last. Anything you’re asked to do with your life. The best of life answers to the best of man. When you walk into an interviewer, the way you walk in, they watch you. Church Gist. The steps you take, how you look, they watch everything. They watch the confidence of your carriage and delivery because they know that without confidence there can be no competence.
In my 500 Level, they asked me to write something about a particular kind of cancer in Pathomorphology. So, I went and did every research and put it in writing and presented, it was a blast. Church Gist. Somebody from that department told me later on that they used as reference for postgraduate. When I was in the board of regents of Covenant University when it started newly, when there was board meeting, I would read as if I was going for exams because they have the vision to make that University top 20 university in the world by the year of 2020 at that time. I would read Havard, Oxford, Cambridge, John Hopkins, ten top universities in the world, what made them top so that when they say, ‘talk’, I won’t be saying, “erhm, I think we should pray very well”. Church Gist. Oral Roberts said, “everybody wants to say something but not everybody has what to say”. But when it is time to speak that you’ll have something to say.
– somebody say a loud Amen!
When we go for meetings with our Father in the Lord, atimes, you will have few minutes notice to make a presentation, if you’re lucky, you can have overnight. Church Gist. Irrespective of the notice, what would be prepared can be a week’s delivery that is pushed into 40 minutes. One of my brothers and friend, everytime, he’d just tell me, “look, what you preached to us now is one week seminar”. One Pastor there told me, “excuse me sir, the message you just preached now, I have 6 messages out of it”. Church Gist. That is, apart from it profiting his life, he’s going to break it down to 6 messages. Job has been made easy for him for at least 6 services. Don’t live life ‘yegeyeciously’, live life with audacity, alacrity and authority.
I told my wife, I said, the reason why I try to appear sharp all the time, even in the house, they can’t catch me wearing slippers from the bedroom. Church Gist. Because I don’t know who I would meet at any time, I don’t want to be taken unawares. If you present me before any president per time, I should be able to address him without needing to change and come. Church Gist. Take life more seriously, so that you can end more gloriously. There’s a place at the top, a place of influence for the purpose of the Kingdom, to function for the Kingdom adequately and you must make up your mind that you’d step into that place. This is Pre-Convention service, by the time this week is over, we are stepping up and dominating by light.
