- Cardinal Mario Grech, The Visionary Reformer: We now arrive at number 6 where we find a figure at the very center of the Vatican’s evolving vision, Cardinal Mario Gretch. At 67 years old, this Maltese Prelate may hail from one of the smallest countries in Europe but his influence within the Church is anything but small. Grech currently serves as the Secretary General of the Synod of Bishops placing him at the helm of one of Pope Francis’ most ambitious undertakings, the Global Synod on Synodality. Church Gist. This initiative which encourages bishops, clergy and lay people alike to engage in open dialogue, listening and discernment seeks to reshape how the Church understands governance and participation. It is a bold effort, one that aims to make the Church more responsive, more inclusive and more deeply connected to the concerns of its people. Supporters see in him a bridge builder, someone capable of connecting voices across continents, cultures and ideologies.
