Anything that is put up for sale is usually openly displayed so that people can see and buy. As Christians, we are not exhibitionists who display our body as if it is being advertised for sale. Our body is to be covered and protected, that was why clothes were made. We are not selling our body parts, why are they being displayed openly? For attention? For sale? Yet, when people begin to comment and call names, we get angry. What they see determines what they will say about you. Does your appearance command respect or derogatory and insultive comments from people?
Our dressing is as important as our character. Our outward and inward characteristics must be in sync. It is conflicting and double standard for one to speak “God” and the other speaking otherwise. You can be well covered, yet classy. It is important for us as Christian women to dress in a way that pleases God. Though it may sound archaic in today’s “anything goes” society, modesty and femininity are still important principles for women to follow. When the light of the world begins to behave like the world itself, we have missed the purpose for which God created us. We are to be distinct, separate, unique, good, different and reflectors and carriers of God’s glory.
We thank God for role models that have proved that you can be beautiful, classy, humble, well behaved and yet fashionable. You wonder why our pastors shower so much praises on their wives, it is because they exude grace, virtue, strength, and class; not just inwardly but their outward appearance as well. They are class and grace personified. If you ever thought that being a pastor’s wife will ruin your fashion sense then you just might belong to the old school when being fashionable is regarded as out of sync with spirituality. When we take a look at these wonderful women, they exhibit everything in detail as described by Apostle Paul in 1 Peter 3:2-5 in how they dress, speak, think and act. Beautiful, modest, decent, yet classy and simple. Ladies can take a cue from these women of substance and learn how to look beautiful, simple, well- covered, yet classy and sleek. They accentuate their beauty knowing that their physical beauty is symbolic of the spiritual beauty of Christ’s Bride, the Church. They dress first and foremost to please God and to show the beauty of his creation.
These are some of the principles that have been studied and seen from these women over the years that we can strive to emulate as it relates to how we should dress. These set of women are not just virtuous women, but women who are stylish and are as beautiful as the messages they preach to their congregation. They look elegant and trendy in whatever they wear.
1) Pleasing the Lord with what they wear..
It is very clear that these women understand what it means to please God, not only with how they worship, their reverence to husbands but also with their appearance. They are deliberate with answering this question with how they dress; “Can people see past what you are wearing to the One Who is inside of you?”. They are
never caught wearing clothes that reveal any of their body parts. They are usually covered and beautiful, glorifying God with their dressing. They know to whom they belong and dress accordingly. 1 Corinthians 10:31
2) They are stylish, modest and classy.
As much as they are modest, they each have their style. Whether it is their traditional or modern attire, we can learn a lot from the individuality showcased in their dressing. They don’t do too much.
3) Neat and well-ironed clothing
Have you ever seen them on dirty or squeezed clothes? They appear in clothes they are neat and in good taste. Proverbs 31:22
4) They don’t lower standards to conform to trends.
To them, God’s standard is God’s standards. You hardly see them trying so hard to conform to society’s trends. Fads come and go, but our appearance should not be based on what is popular in the world. Romans 12:2
5) They depict simplicity
Their simplicity is in a class of its own. They dress simple but create an attractive aura whenever they step out. I Peter 3:2-5
A Christian is to be a light to the world (Matthew 5:14-16), an example of balance and good taste. Clothes can be fashionable without being immodest or peculiar. Apparel should be appropriate for the occasion—decent swimsuits for the beach, and usually a dress or other nicer outfit for special occasions. A Christian woman should especially strive to look nice for her husband and family. We can learn from these women who have shown great examples over the years. They are great role models as to how we should dress.
Ask yourself. What are you depicting through your dressing? God or otherwise?
