Sword of the Spirit Ministries, also known as Christ Life Church was founded in February 1989 as an offshoot of a prayer group made up of 7 Spirit filled believers. The main purpose of the prayer group which started in 1983 was to ensure continuous fire on the prayer altar as Brother Francis Wale Oke (as he was called) embarked on nationwide programmes and crusades in the late 1970s and 1980s.
Before long, the prayer group grew to about 80 members, but they were disbanded by Brother Francis Wale Oke because he didn’t want to be a pastor, advising the members to go to other churches, while retaining the initial 7 members who kept on with the prayer meeting. However, the group continued to grow with new set of converts, added each week as the man of God ministered. After disbanding the group the second time, the Lord gave His servant a revelation, rebuking him for sending His people away who were hungry for the bread of life which the Lord had given him to distribute. This led him to stop sending the people away.
In 1984, while studying the scriptures, the Lord spoke to him from 2 Chronicles 36: 23 that one day, he was going to use him to raise a great church in Ibadan, his Jerusalem which will impact the whole world. Although the Church did not start off immediately, the prayer group meeting was extended to Mondays (Bible Teaching) and Wednesdays (prayer meeting).
In the first week of February 1989, while Bishop Francis Wale Oke, was on a ministerial assignment in Lagos, God told him that it was time for the Church in Ibadan, Oyo State to start. The announcement was made the following Monday to the fellowship and on Sunday 12th February 1989, Christ life Church started at 46 Old Ife Road, Loyola Ibadan, Oyo State Nigeria. The first service had about 200 people in attendance and the topic of the sermon was “I will build my Church” from Matthew 16:18.
The Church’s mission is to lead people to Christ massively all over the world, make the world a better place through practical application of the Gospel of Christ and make Heaven our home at last.
In line with her mission ‘to establish vibrant churches strategically all over the world that will plant other vibrant churches’, the Church is headquartered at The Garden of Victory, Olaogun Road, Old Ife Road, Ibadan, Nigeria with branches across Nigeria, United Kingdom, United States, Canada and Russia.
