DODIE OSTEEN CANCER STORY
Dodie Osteen founded the Lakewood Church with her late husband John Osteen in 1959. She has five precious children, among which is the Senior Pastor of the Church, Joel Osteen. After a miraculous healing from cancer in 1981, God called her into a special ministry of prayers. Through this ministry, she has touched lives all over the World.
Her Cancer Testimony;
“ I was diagnosed of liver cancer, I had been healthy, I loved working outside, I did all the hard work from the time I send my children to school till the time I went to bed. My son Paul who is eight years older than Joel said to me when I went to his graduation from Medical School, ‘Mother, you look a little bit older than I expected you to look and a little bit jaundiced, I think you need to go check yourself’. I knew I had been tired, but I didn’t think about that, we had a big conference coming, I called the Doctor and he said, well, just come in and let me check you. I went and after he checked, I said can I go because I have a conference coming up next week, he said no, I have to stay in the hospital for at least two to three days. I ended up staying there for twenty days and it was right before Christmas time. I never expected the diagnosis to be cancer of the liver; I thought it would be just some little thing.
When he said it has something to do with your liver, I thought it had something to do with when I went with John overseas, I picked up a parasite or something simple, but he said I had cancer of the liver. He met John and he said we don’t have anything to do, she may take chemotherapy, then it was different, more than 36 years ago. I was 48 years old at the time and I will be 87 in October. See how good God works, it was the 28th day after they found out that I had cancer and had done every test under the sun, I was so tired and weary. I want to let you know that we went home and the next day, we lay on the floor at the foot of our bed and John prayed. I will never forget what he said, he said;
‘Jesus, heal my wife’, he casted the devil out that is the demon forces of cancer, he said I command cancer to leave her body; as far as I am concerned, it left that day, it didn’t seem like it did but any way, he said
‘I need her Jesus,
The Church needs her Jesus,
Her mom and dad need her Jesus,
The children needs her,
And Jesus, You need her’.
I got up from the floor, my Bible was in front of the bed and I said, Jesus would You mind if I stood on the Word of God, I thought, would Jesus be pleased if I stood on His Word, I don’t think He would care, I think He would be proud of me. I put my little feet on the Bible and said Jesus; I am standing on Your Word. I went around the house on 11 December 1981; I believed that Jesus healed me. When anyone asks, how are you Mrs Dodie? I never said I feel bad, I just say I am blessed, Jesus healed me and I kept on saying it. It was just wonderful how God helped me and that is when I started praying for other people.
The healing was not an instantaneous thing, but it was as I confessed the Word of God, read the Scriptures, prayed and believed that on 11 December, I received my healing, it eventually came.
Jesus doesn’t love me more than he loves you, you just believe Him for whatever you need because Jesus is the same and He will never change.”
Dodie Osteen’s remarkable testimony brought about her book ‘Healed Of Cancer’. In the book, she highlighted forty scriptures that helped her to keep up hope. This book has since then become a reference material to those in need of a miracle. Her faith has encouraged lots of people over the years and helped to strengthen people’s faith in Christ Jesus.
