1 Corinthians 6:19-20
“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”

Our bodies belong to God! We must never forget this and as such we need to give it dignity and honour. Our dressings also should be moderate and pleasing to God.

Contrary to popular opinion, there’s no harm in trying to look good for God but you have to do that in a more modest, moderate and skillful way.

These are simple and stylish tips to dress for Church on Sunday!

  1. It is advisable to choose your best clothes and make sure that they are clean and neatly pressed.
  2. Business Casual: For a business casual look, you should opt for a Sport coat or Blazer jacket, coupled with a light-colored shirt and pants (trousers) or chinos, khaki and jeans and then add a pair of nice shoes or boots, complete the look with a nice wristwatch or tie if you want.
  3. Native Attire: this is a very common way to dress for Church in Africa, especially in Nigeria. For a native attire, whether it is Agbada, Danshiki, Senator Style, Niger-Delta traditional attire or a simple Ankara/African Print style, it should be sewn to fit your body properly without being too tight or too loosely fitted. The fit is one of the most important aspects in clothing
  1. Business Wear: For this look, wear a dark, solid coloured or pinstriped suit, pair it with a white dress shirt, a conservative tie and black shoe or brown shoe. You can also mix and match a three-piece suit look and add accessories to elevate the look.
  2. Avoid drawing undue attention to yourself by wearing inappropriate clothes that would stand out in a bad way. Clothes such as deep V-neck T-shirts, Shirts with Hood Ripped Holes, torn jeans etc
  3. Wear a neatly pressed suit and tie or a button-down shirt and dress in pants (trousers) that are free of stains or wrinkles and remember to tuck it into your pants (trousers).
  4. Colours – choose the right colour. Some colours are considered classic and never go out of style, such as brown, black, khaki, gray and navy blue.

As a gentleman, make sure that what you are wearing is not going to distract others in the Church and you must avoid anything that exposes an unnecessary amount of your skin and in all let your dressing be to the Glory of God.
