– Pastor E. A. Adeboye on “FOR WHOM THE HEAVENS OPEN (Part 23)” || RCCG Online Sunday Service || 30th July, 2023
Today we are moving on to Joshua 6:3-5. The reason we read up to verse 5 even though we want to focus on verse 3 is that the big day is going to be the 7th day but before the 7th day there is a routine that is going to be followed everyday for 6 days. Today we want to look at the fact that God said that they are to go round about the city once a day for 6 days. Church Gist. Many of us think that in a situation like this, the focus should be on the 7th day. Yea, the 7th day is important and we will talk about the 7th day but everyday is important to God. You don’t get to 7 without passing through 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. Psalm 90:12. Everything that may appear to you to be routine matters to God. Isaiah 28:10. A man survives by eating a meal at a time. You don’t survive on feasts – feasts come on occasions. We have Christmas day, New year, birthday when you celebrate and have a feast but nobody survives on a feast. You survive on daily bread and even when you want to eat your daily bread, you don’t swallow everything at one time. You take a morsel at a time and with every morsel you have to chew and chew. So what you consider routine is very important to God.
Genesis 17:1. He didn’t say jump before me, do a very long jump, he said walk – walk one step after another. So we want to spend few minutes discussing what should be the routine of a daily walk with God. What should be daily routine of a Christian life? Church Gist. It is daily walking with God that actually determines whether you make it home or not. A day is divided into segments: morning, afternoon, evening and night time. You grow day by day so what you do day by day determines the quality of your Christian life. What do you do in the morning? What are you supposed to do every morning?
A true Christian should wake up early in the morning thanking God and praying. Psalm 57:7-8. When a true Christian wakes up in the morning he should begin the day with songs of praise to the most High God, thanking him – Lord, I am alive today, I survived to see another day. Lamentations 3:22-23. When you wake up early in the morning the first thing you should do is praise God for his mercy because not every people who slept yesterday will be awake today. Church Gist. You woke up, you open your eyes and you can still see, you open your mouth you can still speak, your ears are still hearing, you can move your hands, legs, you should shout halleluyah! Mark 1:35. Jesus Christ went out to a solitary place, you can be sure he went to commune with his father. That’s the first thing every Christian should do every morning.
What’s the next thing you do in the morning? You take your bath. (Laughs) I smiled because I hope that is true in every home because I happen to know some places in the world under the pretense that the weather is cold, who don’t take their bath every day. I smiled because I remembered years ago when a friend of mine was getting married and there was a misunderstanding between some of his relatives who came from home. Church Gist. There was a complain – one complained that the other one will not allow him to share his towel. The man said, “I don’t know what’s wrong with him. Does he think I’m dirty? After all I take my bath every Sunday.” Next thing you should do every morning? Take your bath! Psalm 119:9. How do you take your bath? By paying attention to the Word of God. After you’ve praised him, worship him early in the morning, study the Bible. That’s how you keep yourself clean.
Of course the next thing you do is to dress up. 1 Peter 5:5. Church Gist. Every morning when you wake up, remind yourself, “I must remain humble.” Whatever situation may occur today, I must remain humble. That’s how you dress yourself.
Of course if you are not fasting the next thing you do is, you eat. Jeremiah 15:16. Early in the morning you must eat the Word of God. Matthew 4:3-4. So you see that your morning is loaded with the Word. It is the Word that will cleanse you, remind you that you are to be clothed with humility, be your early morning food. Then of course, you go to work. 2 Thessalonians 3:10. Church Gist. He who will not work should not eat. “What if I have no job?” Create one. I remember the story of one fellow who said, “I have qualification but I couldn’t get a job.” He said, “but I am a good cook” and he got some money to get a little pail of beans and some oil and located one little corner somewhere here in Lagos and began to roast akara. You know Lagos people: when they suddenly saw somebody roasting akara by the road side, they began to stop. It wasn’t long before the man who started roasting akara bought a motorcycle and began to ride okada. It wasn’t long after that one that he bought a second motorcycle and he became an employer of labour. You have no job? Create one! Because if you won’t work, you are not supposed to eat. Church Gist. Proverbs 22:29. So after you wake up, praising the Almighty God, you wash yourself in his Word, you’re dressed in humility and you’ve eaten the Word of God, go to work! That’s the morning.
What about noon time – the afternoon? You keep on meditating on the Word of God because you want to be blessed. Psalm 1:1-3. There’s something I want to share with you as a child of God: in the afternoon expect divine visitations. Acts 10:1-23. In the afternoon expect divine visitations – meaning what? In the afternoon while you are at work, wherever you may be in the afternoon, pay attention to people who cross your paths. There are no accidental meetings. God knows what he is doing. The fellow you meet today might come round to be of tremendous help to you tomorrow. Church Gist. I don’t have time to tell you stories but I can clearly remember somebody I met on the sports field as the games master of a Secondary school who later on became very instrumental in my pursuit of my post graduate studies. Everybody you meet that you thought was an accidental meeting could be somebody God has lined up for your future. That’s why in the afternoon, be busy with your father’s business. Luke 2:42-49. Never forget as a Christian that the work you are doing to earn a salary is your extra job. Your original job is to occupy till the Lord comes. You are to keep on using every opportunity to witness. Church Gist. You never can tell who you are going to witness to today and what that fellow will turn round to become a help in your life.
You probably have heard the testimony of a sister, an accountant who went to attend a meeting of accountants and there she witnessed to a brother. The brother gave his life to Jesus Christ and unknown to her, that’s the brother God has prepared for her to marry. Church Gist. Today I know that their marriage is one of the most successful ones in the Redeemed Christian Church of God. You never can tell who you are going to meet in the afternoon. Be busy witnessing.
Then comes the evening. The evening according to Psalm 141:2 is the time when you offer sacrifices to God. That’s why you find that true children of God, when they finish from their place of work, they head straight to the house of God. “Oh today it is digging deep, tomorrow it is faith clinic, next time is Sunday school preparatory class.” Church Gist. When they are not doing that, they are having a house fellowship meeting. Every evening, some people have complained, “how come every evening there is something to do about God?” The evening is meant for the use to worship God, sacrificing to him. Which brings us to the night time.
Normally, the night time is when work ceases. John 9:4. At night, working ceases because it is time to sleep, time to rest. Psalm 127:2. You know what? The night time is also the time for dreams. Some of the dreams are just as a result of the work you have done during the day. Ecclesiastes 5:3. Church Gist. Multitude of businesses can produce dreams and some of the things you met during the day that are not completely cleared and you have some things to worry about, when you go to bed, God could come to you in your dream and show you the way out. Many dreams could be revelations from God. Genesis 41:1-57. God showed Pharaoh the things that he was about to do in the dream. When we are talking about Joseph you know he got his dreams – dream 1, 2 … You only dream when you are sleeping.
But also the night time is the time to meditate on God himself. Not just his word now, but himself. Psalm 63:6. While all the works have ceased now, “God you’re so good to me, look at what you’ve done to me again today. Church Gist. Look at how far you have helped me.” That’s the night time. No distractions now, no phone calls, you can now spend time as you are lying on your bed to think of the one who has seen you through yet another day. Psalm 130:6.
The most important thing is that at the night time as you are going to bed, remember that God could arrive before tomorrow morning. Luke 17:34. Those who know me they will tell you that, every time we have our night devotion before we go to bed, my last prayer every night since I got born again, “Lord, if you return tomorrow, please don’t leave me behind.” Church Gist. That’s why you should go to bed – spotless. Ephesians 5:27. What do we mean by spotless? Don’t let anything go with you to bed that the Lord may not approve of. Ephesians 4:26. Every true Christian couple must settle every quarrel before they go to bed everyday. Spend every day as very precious to God. It may be to you – a routine; but to God, that’s what makes all the difference.
I have just told you how to spend a good day – day after day, from morning till night, all around the Word of God.
