Each time I come to Jos, it’s always very difficult for me to leave. There’s something magnetic about you. If I’m ever to have a second place where I will retire to, it will be Jos. God bless you all. Church Gist. I salute all my brothers and sisters, both from the government and from the Church. The God you have come to honour today will honour you all.Â
Revelation 4:10-11. We want to talk about, Promoted for a purpose. What’s the meaning of promoted? It means lifted up from one level to a higher level by someone who has the authority to do so. I mean, a cleaner cannot lift up a cashier and make him an accountant. Promotion comes from God; promotion doesn’t come from the East, West or South. Church Gist. It comes from God and God is about to promote somebody this morning. When God decides to promote, according to 1 Samuel 2:7-8, he can pick up even a bigger from the dunghill and cause him to sit with Kings and I know what I’m talking about.
I was born in a village that until recently was not even on the map of Nigeria. My father was so poor, poor people called him poor. Church Gist. But God picked the son of a nobody and promoted him that when I visit some nations of the world, their president will send his car to go and collect me.
– The God who promoted me, will promote somebody here!
When we say, promoted for a purpose, what do we mean by purpose? We mean the reason why the promotion was done. According to the text we read this morning, everything God does, is for a purpose and the purpose is for his own pleasure. The 24 elders in Heaven are constantly saying to him, they lay down their crowns and say, “Lord, you’re the one who gave us the crowns; we lay the crowns at your feet and we say, you’re worthy. Church Gist. You’re the only one that should be glorified. Thank you for making us for your pleasure.” From today onwards, someone listening to me, the rest of your life will bring pleasure to God.
When God heals you, he’s promoting you from sickness to health because in the name of the one who sent me, whatever sickness you brought here you won’t go home with it.
When He heals, it is for a purpose. For example in Mark 2:1-12 – He healed that man so that God might be glorified. The reason he is going to heal somebody here today is so that for the rest of your life, God will be glorified. Matthew 8:14-34 – The reason he healed her immediately is because he needed somebody to prepare him food. Church Gist. As soon as he healed the woman, the woman began to minister. Everything that has not been allowing you to minister to God the way you want, God will remove it today.
When he sets the captive free, it is so that his name might be glorified. Mark 5:2-20 – when Jesus set him free and drove out all those demons, the man became an evangelist for God. Luke 8:1-3. When Jesus chased out 7 demons out of Mary Magdalene, it is so that Mary Magdalene can become a divine treasurer. Church Gist. You may not realize it, but the demons in the world particularly those in your family, they have a rough idea of what God wants you to become and that’s why they have been doing everything to slow you down. But I have good news for you: this morning, God is going to promote you beyond their reach so that the purpose of God for your life will be fulfilled.
If you ask my pastor here, he will tell you: they were not even sure we will hold this meeting this year but I told them, “this year, I’m coming.” I told them I’m coming because light is not to run from darkness, it is darkness that will run from light. Church Gist. The devil had a rough idea of the revival that is going to take place in the North beginning from Jos. For one reason or the other, he has kept me away from here for 7 years and I said, no more.Â
– As the Lord lives, the one who has called me, every year I will be back. Church Gist. (It is) Because the fire that God is lighting today will never go out!
When God prospers the poor, it is for a purpose. Genesis 12:1-3 – God pronounced 7 blessings on Abraham and the number 4 of it, the turning point of it all is that he will become a blessing.
– May I decree to somebody here today, it doesn’t matter how poor you are now, my father will bless you and you will become a blessing.
God is eager to bless you, provided you are eager to be a blessing. I’ve always told the story of a small boy: several years ago, every Sunday as he is coming to Church he has to beg the mother, “please give me one Naira.” What do you want to do with it? “I want to give it to Daddy G. O.” – Every Sunday, very small thing. He will come and give me a Naira. Church Gist. One day he said, Daddy I’m going to buy you a plane. I laid my hand on him and said, Amen. Well, as little children are, he grew up and travelled so I didn’t see my one Naira every Sunday. Then one day in London, we just finished a Holy Ghost Service in London. There was this young man standing before me, “Daddy you don’t remember me?” I said, the face looks familiar. He said, Ehhh, I’m your one Naira. He said, “I don’t have the money to buy you a jet yet, but I have a gift for you outside and it can’t be brought in.” Church Gist. So I went to see and it’s a Mercedes Benz car. I laid my hands on him and said, God who has brought you thus far, will take you to the level where you will fulfill that purpose.
Some months ago, I heard that the same one one Naira boy has won an oil block. I said, oh, there comes my jet! Church Gist. Is there anybody here today, who will want to be a blessing? My God will promote you!
When God anoints you, it’s for a purpose. I told the ministers and said, the anointing of God on you is not for you, it is for the people who are in need. I told them, a tree does not eat the fruit it produces. Have you seen a mango tree eating mango? Or an orange tree eating orange? No, it may produce for others. Church Gist. When God anoints you, it is so that through your anointing, the yokes of others might be destroyed. For example in 1 Samuel 22:1-2. Those who are heavily in debt he said, if you want to collect your money by force, ehhh you have to deal with David the giant killer first. Years later, all these vagabonds, all these hopeless people who gathered together to the anointed one, became mighty men. 2 Samuel 23:1-39. The anointing for greatness that came upon the shepherd boy, that promoted him out of nothingness was used to produce mighty men.
I have good news for somebody here: they do not know you now, even in your family you may not count, but I decree, in the name that is above every other name, because of the anointing that you will collect this morning, mighty men will be following you.
When somebody had been stagnant for a long time and God decides to lift the fellow out of stagnancy, it’s not only that the fellow will praise God, but he will teach others how to praise God. Acts 3:1-8.
– There’s somebody here who has been stagnant for years, you have been on the same spot for years, you have been working for years there’s nothing to show for it, people are beginning to say, where is the God you say you’re serving? Church Gist. But in the name that is above every other name, your progress begins today!
But the story of that man didn’t end there, he was leaping, walking, praising God and went into the temple now and showed those people in the temple, “ah, this is how to praise God not the way you are doing it.” Church Gist. You know, those in the temple when they’re singing they hardly even move. But this man was jumping, he was leaping, his hallelujah wasn’t a cold one.
– God is going to put an end to stagnancy in your life and you will stop praising God as if he is begging you!
It doesn’t matter how big you are, you can’t receive a miracle and be quiet about it. All the great great men that will come to Church and will hardly open their mouths in praise, when they go to the stadium to watch football and their team scores a goal, they forget who they are, they shout “goal” like everybody else. Church Gist. If Jesus is going to score a goal for you today, shout hallelujah!
Before I forget my self (laughs) it happens whenever I am in Jos. When God saves a sinner, when he promotes a sinner, it is always for his own pleasure. He took Saul who became Paul, who described himself as chief of sinners – 1 Timothy 1:15, he turned him to Chief Apostle. Church Gist. That’s a big promotion – 2 Corinthians 11:5. God went to the worst of sinners and turned him to the best of saints not for fun, but for a purpose. Acts 19:11-12. When God promotes a sinner, turns him to a saint, it’s for a purpose. I am an example. I have said it before: I was so rotten, I was so bad, if I was Jesus I won’t save this boy. I won’t bother you with details. Church Gist. I will give you just one illustration. As a young boy, I was a sports man and I loved photography before the day when everybody has become photographer. You combine those two, you get a dangerous boy. It got to a stage I had so many girlfriends I couldn’t even remember the number. Occasionally, when two or three of them collide in my room, I had a problem introducing one to the other. “Oh, this is the daughter of the uncle of my person…” Glory be to God! But of all these my girlfriends, there was one we did everything together and when I say everything, I won’t tell you the details – it’s none of your business. But then we grew up and she went her way and I went my way. She got married, I got married, years passed. I was lecturing at the University of Ilorin and pastoring our little Church in Ilorin. Church Gist. Then in the place of work, they transferred her husband to Ilorin and she came with her husband. She had a baby born lame and somebody told her, “oh there’s a pastor in one Church up there. Take this child to him. If he prays, the child may walk.” So she brought the child to the mission house where I was saying, she met some people at the verandah and said, I want to see the pastor. They said he is inside. So she came in and saw me, “ah, old flame long time no see, etc.” Then she said, I want to see the pastor. I said, yes can I help you? She said, I said I want to see the pastor. I said, I am the pastor. She said, you? You the pastor? I said yes. She said, you will pray and God will answer? She didn’t know that between the time we left and now, something happened. I had met the Lord Jesus and when a man is in Christ, he’s a new creature. Church Gist. Old things are passed away, all things are become new. We prayed a simple prayer and the child began to walk for the first time.
When God promotes a sinner, he turns him to a saint, it’s for a purpose so that they can now go round performing miracles for fellow sinners. That’s why I am sent to you today. Church Gist. If you know you are still living in sin, “oh well you go to Church,” that’s not what I’m talking about. I am talking about the difference between doing sin as you want and living the life of holiness. If you know you’re still living in sin, you still tell lies, you still cheat, fornicate, tell ‘white lies’, I want you to let God promote you this morning, let him give you the kind of salvation he gave me. Church Gist. The kind of salvation that turned me to a brand new creature, that allowed old things to pass and all things became new because if you say you are born again and you are still living in sin, somebody is deceiving somebody. If you’re genuinely born again, sin will become completely repulsive to you.
